Explore Buhač (Tanacetum cinerarifolium) – The Forgotten Flower of Dalmatia

Hiking on the island is a discovering of nature and history.
People walked to get to their fields. And they still do. The only way to experience the island is to follow the footprints of the locals.
And hiking will show all the beautiful wonders of Hvar. Such as Buhač.
The charming Buhač, also known as Dalmatian Pyrethrum, is one of the hidden gems of Hvar’s natural landscape. This delicate flower, resembling a daisy or chamomile, graces the fields of Dalmatia with its graceful presence. With a long stem that lifts its blossom above the surrounding grasses, Buhač seems to dance on the breeze, almost like a butterfly enjoying the sunshine.
It was a key export in the 20th century, prized for its natural insecticidal properties (known as “pyrethrum”). Today, it colors the fields during our spring hikes. This native Balkan flower continues to thrive in the wilds of Hvar, especially in the quaint village of Brusje, which was once known for exporting it.
The Dalmatian countryside was once built on the foundations of Mediterranean flora like lavender, rosemary, and sage. But their stunning beauty remains, a testament to the wild, untamed nature of the island. And today, fields in Dalmatia are beautiful hiking grounds.
We also call Buhač the “Lady Daisy”. Its delicate flowers are a reminder of the deep connection between the people of Hvar and their natural environment. Whether you’re a history buff, a nature enthusiast, or a botany lover, Buhač is a beautiful part of the island’s story.

Caper Bush (Capparis spinosa) – Nature’s Resilience
The caper bush or Flinders rose is another icon of Hvar’s rugged beauty. This hardy plant grows abundantly across the island, often emerging from the cracks in ancient stone walls or abandoned houses. Despite its minimal need for water, the caper thrives in the harsh Mediterranean climate, with its roots firmly embedded in the rocky soil.
One of the most striking features of the caper is its flower—a breathtaking mix of purple, yellow, and white that captures the essence of Hvar’s wild side. The flower’s long, slender pistils rise like delicate threads reaching for the sky, creating a perfect landing pad for bees and other pollinators.
We harvest capers and sell them at a fraction of the cost you would pay in stores. It would be a shame not to, as they grow from the walls of our stone houses. Caperws have an unmatched flavor. Its robust, tangy taste is a staple in Mediterranean cuisine, appearing in everything from salads to pasta.
